The Ancient Art of Roman Numerals 🏛️
Roman numerals originated in ancient Rome and remained the usual way of writing numbers throughout Europe well into the Late Middle Ages. They are based on letters of the alphabet, which are combined to signify the sum of their values. This system is still used today for a variety of formal and stylistic purposes.
The Basic Symbols
The Roman numeral system uses seven basic symbols:
- I = 1
- V = 5
- X = 10
- L = 50
- C = 100
- D = 500
- M = 1,000
How Roman Numerals are Formed
Numbers are formed by combining these symbols and adding their values. For example, III is three (1+1+1) and VII is seven (5+1+1). The key rule that makes the system more compact is the subtractive notation. When a smaller symbol appears before a larger symbol, it is subtracted.
- IV = 4 (5 - 1)
- IX = 9 (10 - 1)
- XL = 40 (50 - 10)
- XC = 90 (100 - 10)
- CD = 400 (500 - 100)
- CM = 900 (1000 - 100)
This calculator uses these rules to accurately construct the Roman numeral for any number. The standard system does not have a way to represent zero and was not designed for numbers larger than a few thousand, which is why this tool is typically limited to numbers up to 3999 (MMMCMXCIX).
